The Baras Foundation was established in 1978, to allow individuals to reach out into the community and help in any way the Foundation can. The first major project was the children’s call-in service. The Foundation discovered  many needs it had not anticipated. The Baras Foundation wanted to be able to jump in and help immediately whenever and wherever the need occurred.

The Story Lady (aka Carol Baras) has been caring for lonely, abused and neglected children since 1978.  She established a phone line for them to call 291-KIDS in order to listen to a positive story everyday.

In 1980 People Magazine had a two page feature about Mrs. Baras and 291-KIDS.  She was a featured guest on Good Morning America, the Today Show,  Hour Magazine and newspapers across the country featured 291-KIDS including the New York Times.

This year the stories have been put on our website as kids are computer savvy now.  This project has been helping area children to become more self-reliant, happy and confident youngsters. If you have any suggestions to enhance this project please write to:  Carol Baras, Baras Foundation, P.O. Box 3189, San Diego, CA, 92163.

In October of 1993, the Foundation opened the first of nine non-profit thrift stores at 1455 University in Hillcrest. To continue, we need your help.
